Keeping in touch from Scotland

Yesterday, I went with the first and second eleven to Edinburgh for a hockey match. It was about a two hour bus journey, but well worth it! When we pulled into the school (Fettes), I thought we’d arrived at the wrong place!
I’m going skiing for a week in Austria! My half-term holiday starts this friday, so i’m meeting up with Sean, Kelsi and another aussie gappy who goes to sean’s school. We fly out of Southampton airport this saturday morning. To get there, I need to take a 7 hour train to the other side of the country, and meet the others at the airport. And then we fly together to Austria! We’re getting a lift pass that covers 5 ski resorts and over 170km of ski runs! The resorts names are: Albachtal, Wilschonau, SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser-Brixental, Kitzbuhel and Schneewinkel… and that’s not including the funny little dots on top of the letters! I guess i’ll have to brush up on my Austrian before I leave…
Can’t wait! 🙂
The Headmaster of Ardvreck asked us to do an Australia day assembly.
We planned and organised until it was perfect – um, actually, it was pretty last minute! Anyway, it went really well. We had a powerpoint presentation and talked about a little bit of history behind Australia day, and everything that Australia day is to us.
Saturday, the 26th of January – Australia day.
It becomes so much more important when you’re on the other side of the globe in sub-zero temperatures.
At the gappies conference, all of the Aussies agreed to meet up at the ‘Walkabout’ – an Aussie bar in Edinburgh. So I got all dressed up in my Wallabies gear and draped the Australian flag around my neck, and we headed off to the bar.
While in Edinburgh, we visited Edinburgh castle (see the post below). Outside was this guy, who dresses as William Wallace (anyone seen braveheart?) and will pose for pictures to collect money for charity. He’s already raised over a million pounds, and has even been on Getaway! I couldn’t pass up the opportunity!
The first night in Edinburgh (the friday night), we went on a pub crawl.
Adjacent to the main street in Edinburgh (princes st), there is an old lane closed off to traffic, that is filled to the brim with old scottish bars.
We walked along and went into whichever ones took our fancy! Continue reading this post…
This weekend was our exeat. It’s a long weekend where the boarders go home, meaning that us gappies are free for the weekend to go exploring. The four of us tripped to Edinburgh by train, and arrived at Waverly station at about 3pm on the friday. We walked to Princes st. (which is the main hub of edinburgh) and checked in at the hilton hotel. Just kidding. We dumped our bags in a dingy youth hostel:
During monday’s staff meeting, one of the teacher’s said that they were short of staff members for the skiing trip on Wednesday, and if anyone would like to volunteer, it would be greatly appreciated. So being the decent guy I am, I put up my hand. “I guess i’ll do it.” Ha ha. A day’s free skiing? Who wouldn’t?
This has been a crazy week. It started on Tuesday…
Us four gappies were invited to a gappies conference organised by the scottish independent schools council thingy. We were kindly given the day off to go to this, so we travelled by train and arrived in Edinburgh at about 9:30am. Edinburgh is amazing! It was in the local Hilton hotel (no complaints here!).
